(L-R) Paul Fix, John Dehner, Lee Marvin.

Character Actors
These three gentlemen are certainly very familiar to diehard classic film & TV fans. I came across this rare photo by accident and have been intrigued by it ever since. From the left are Paul Fix, John Dehner and, of course, Lee Marvin.  Combined their performances would make up the bulk of popular culture in the mid- to late-20th century.

I don’t think they ever worked together but I do know that Fix was a neighbor of Lee and Betty Marvin’s in the early 60s when they lived in an area know as The Uplifter’s Ranch. ‘Uncle Paul’ was Fix’s nickname of choice. He provd a good utility actor in scores of films but Baby Boomers, such as myself, probably remember him best as Micah, the town sheriff in The Rifleman.

Dehner also enlived many a TV show and film of the 50s-60s. He got his start in radio which made good use of his deep resonant voice, playing Paladin in the radio version of Have Gun Will Travel. Adept and both comedy and drama, but he is probably best remembered for his Twilight Zone appearances, especially the one in which he was a con man in the old west offering to bring the recently deceased back to life.
Other than goofing around a little, I have no idea what they are doing in this photo. Taking a break from painting the Ping Pong table in the Character Actor’s Break Room? Your guess is as good as mine. Feel free to chime in….
