LEE MARVIN’S XMAS MOVIE?

Lee Marvin’s Xmas movie? Well, kinda. To the best of my knowledge Marvin has never made a holiday-themed film. It’s possible he may have done soemthng for TV, though. Not quite sure about that. However, as pointed out in a recent online article, he did make one film that indeed had a Xmas scene in it. Apparently, the scene in director John Ford’s  Donovan’s Reef (1963), in which several characters act out the nativity in a VERY different way qualifies for inclusion on the list of great holiday movies. Further more, the film is currently streaming this month on Amazon Prime and Hulu, which is good to know. I wouldn’t know myself as I don’t stream any of the services that are available out there. Yeah, I know. I’m a 20th century man, living in the 21st century.

(L-R) ‘Boats’ Gilhooley (Lee Marvin) and ‘Monk’ (Mike Mazurki) represent ‘The King of The United States and the King of the Islands in the Xmas pageant with Gilhooley reaping the benefits of the leaky roof he paid for.

As to the scene in the film, it’s both reverent and lighthearted at the same time. As usual, Marvin steals every scene he’s in throughout the movie and sadly, he’s just not in the movie enough. If you haven’t seen the film, I highly encourage you do so, especially the opening brawl between Marvin and John Wayne.

Unfortunately, the fun onscreen did not carry over offscreen as I discovered when researching Lee Marvin Point Blank. You’ll have to read it to find out why.
So, there you have it. Lee Marvin’s Xmas movie for us Lee Marvin fans. Happy holidays one and all and a most joyous new year. Let’s hope it’s better than this year!

KINDLE SALES ON AMAZON REMAIN STEADY

Like most authors, I check my sales numbers on Amazon on a daily basis and the kindle sales of Lee Marvin Point Blank has remained remarkably steady.  It’s interesting in that even though the kindle has been available for quite some time, Amazon has chosen to keep the price discounted almost fifty percent as shown below….

Recent snapshot of Amazon’s pricing of LEE MARVIN: POINT BLANK kindle format.

It’s interesting, as I certainly did not expect that to be the case. When the e-book format was originally launched, my publisher, Tim Schaffner, had a contract with me to receive a better cut of the royalties than the hardcover or paperback version. That still remains intact and at the time, he had also retained the auspices of a p.r. firm to help publicize the book.
That helped of course but the distribution company, Independent Publishing Group (IPG) he had utilized had a young go-getter named Lauren Klouda who was also promoting the book at the time the e-book came out. Her persistence and due dilligence had some remarkable results. She has also since been promoted within IPG for her outstanding work.
In fact, Tim later told me that when he went to the conference at IPG other small publishers approached him and said they wished they had been the ones to publish Lee Marvin Point Blank. I’m not sure, but I think it was the same conference in which my book was used as an example by IPG on how to successfully market a title….

The most amazing part, as far as I’m concerned is that kindle sales are still steady six years later! I don’t know this for a fact but I’m pretty sure it remains the best selling title Schaffner Press ever produced. As Tim called it, it’s an evergreen title not hampered by current events or changing taste of popular culture.
So, all that said, feel free to check out the still reduced price of Amazon’s kindle of Lee Marvin Point Blank. As Lee himself would say, “Semper Fi!”

CYBER MONDAY? LEE MARVIN POINT BLANK!

Cyber Monday is December 2nd and in the spirit of such blatant internet promotion allow me to join the passing parade of shameless self-indulgence with the inclusion of Lee Marvin Point Blank. Yeah, I know the book came out more than six years ago, but it is still very much in print, in demand, and worthy of discovery by those who have yet to purchase it. Why is that you ask? Well, for one thing, as my publisher pointed out, it’s a perennial, not bound by fads or current events that fade in short order. For another, it’s available in several formats, each with its own appeal.

Released January, 2013, the above image is from the hardcover edition of LEE MARVIN POINT BLANK, still very much available.

First up is the hardcover. It remains the first definitive account of the life, work and legacy of one of the most important actors of the second half of the twentieth century. I spent nearly 20 years researching it and the result is 100 exclusive interviews of friends, family and co-workers, many rare never-before-seen photos, letters recounting his harrowing time in WWII and much, much more.  Within a year, the book was also anointed with several awards, such as winning the Bronze in Biography from the Independent Publisher Book Awards (“Ippy”) and being a finalist in Foreword Magazine’s Book of the Year Awards. Not bad for a first-time author, right?

Not long after the release of the hardcover, the Kindle became available via Amazon and the result was quite surprising. An enterprising publicist at the distributor, IPG (Independent Publishing Group), hustled the hell out of the e-book which ultimately made the top five on the coveted  New York Times Bestseller List, as well as the Wall Street Journal and Publisher’s Weekly.

One of the Kindle’s opening images, which was a NY Times best seller.

The following year, my publisher, Tim Schaffner of Schaffner Press, decided to up the ante with the publication of the paperback. He requested that I add some new material to the project….

Table of Contents listing the added data compiled by yours truly for the paperback version.

I was of course pleasantly surprised not only by how well it turned out but also by the addition of several pages consisting of positive feedback from prominent individuals, such as fellow biographers Marshall Terrill (STEVE MCQUEEN: PORTRAIT OF A REBEL), Bill Krohn (HITCHCOCK AT WORK), Stefan Kanfer ( BOGART: TOUGH WITHOUT A GUN), Frank Thompson (NOTHING SACRED: THE CINEMA OF WILLIAM WELLMAN) and others.  Who could ask for more? Talk about an embarrassment of riches.
So, there you have it. My pitch to put LEE MARVIN POINT BLANK on your Cyber Monday holiday shopping list. I realize that regular readers of this blog, (if there are any) may have read this all before but since the key to good promotion is “Tell them what you know, tell them again and then tell them what you told them,” I leave it to one and all to make up their own minds….so what are you waiting for? Do you part for Cyber Monday and get your copy now.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
